Statutory compliance
Lift and lifting equipment inspections
The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) require lifts used at work to be thoroughly examined by a competent person: every six months for lifts carrying people and every twelve months for goods-only lifts, unless a written examination scheme sets otherwise. Routine maintenance is separate from, and in addition to, that examination.
The law behind it
- Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER)
- Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)
What is due and when
| Check | Frequency |
|---|---|
| Thorough examination — passenger lifts | Every six months |
| Thorough examination — goods-only lifts | Every twelve months |
| Routine lift maintenance | Per manufacturer and contract, commonly monthly or quarterly |
Thorough examination is usually carried out by an insurer's engineer, independent of the maintenance contractor.
